Blue Jays home opener - let's play ball!
The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd.... at the Blue Jays Home Opener game against the Boston Red Sox in their hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The stadium there holds about 57,000 seats, so let's say it's not sold out (although that doesn't usually happen til a bit later in the season) and 47,000 bums are in the seats today.
47,000 fans...
The same number of young workers - ages 15 to 24 - who get injured on the job each year in Ontario alone.
In Canada, that number is 160,000 injuries each year, again for young workers.
Staggering numbers.
So if you're at the game today (or any very large sporting or entertainment event), take a look around you: everyone in those rows and rows and rows represent all the burns, cuts, fractures, strains, amputations, etc. that happen in our workplaces.
These are preventable incidents; NOT accidents. Employers can prevent them - if we make some noise. (The roar of the crowd!)
Let's play ball.
