Happy Earth Day: we're green with envy

As we celebrate the 38th Earth Day, we take this moment to remove our hats to environmentalists - the pioneers that kick-started change back in 1970, as well as the folk carrying on that good work today. As pioneers of a social movement of our own - health, safety and wellness at work - you could say we are "green" with envy at the success won by the eco-crowd.

Envious and eager to emulate, I should add. I have tremendous respect for the brave few folks who started speaking out about polluted water, air and natural habitats. Huge kudos for shaking up all those corporate offenders who didn't think they'd ever have to pay the price for contaminating our planet.

Workplace safety and wellness is the 'new green.' We are the Next Big Movement to sweep the world - led by ordinary people like you and me - who are sick and tired of getting sick and hurt at work. We are the "little guys" who are forcing companies to take care of us - just like the eco-warriors forced polluters to change.

So, in honor of Earth Day, why not:

• Blow the whistle on your employer, or someone else's boss, who isn't complying with safety legislation.
• Honor your right to refuse unsafe work - just say no.
• Demand proper training.
• Ask for orientation.
• Join our Facebook group, MySafeWork and add to our discussions there.
