'Best in Blog': Safety content roundup

Heather Angus-Lee, Editor of MySafeWork.com, subscribes to 90 blogs and sites about workplace safety. Here are some of her picks as "Best in Blog" on Safety this past week:

Workplace Violence News blog: "In the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings, universities and colleges use texting as safety tool." Colorado State U, for one, offers this form of emergency contact to its students for free. [Another neat idea: Twitter for crisis communications.]

Personnel Today, HR editors' blog: "Wake up, Sleepyhead." Makes the solid recommendation that you should 'whistleblow' on a work colleague rather than see if his/her insomnia does real damage.

AFL-CIO blog: "Death on the Job report: more workers killed, fewer employer penalties." Read it and weep.

The Safe Workplace blog: "Actual Workplace Injury Rates." Read it and smile.

Weekly Toll blog: "Worker Memorial Day events held." Lengthy list of U.S. ceremonies to honour men and women who have died on the job.

Safety at Work blog: "Remember the personal on World Day for Health and Safety at Work." We liked this Australian safety professional's post so much we blogged on it!

SafeNano Community blog: OK, I admit, I picked this one because of the compelling headline: "Nanotechnology - in bed with Madonna?" Positive review of a recent, surprisingly accessible article about science's "small beauties" in Elle magazine, running cheek-and-jowl with a profile of the pop starlet.

Workers Comp Insider blog: "The 41-hour smoke break and other elevator stories." Caught my attention since I am morbidly afraid of elevators. "... they can really go wrong. And they go wrong more frequently than you might think."

Consumer Reports on Safety blog: "Toy industry moves toward safety certification program." Nice that the horribly beleagured sector might do something about all those toxic toys moving through the marketplace. And speaking of certification ideas...

MySafeWork blog: "Safety stamp of approval - on companies!" We love our own idea to 'mark' employers with some kind of "safety champion" designation.
