Safety week born out of NAFTA

Once again, it's great to be Canadian! Just like I was bragging last week that World Day for Safety and Health at Work was started by Canada and then caught on with many other nations - so, too, is this week's NAOSH event a Canuck-born idea!

NAOSH stands for North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (May 4 - 10). This is the 11th year that the United States and Mexico have recognized the occasion; my country started Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Week way back in 1986.

In 1997, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the three nations led to the idea of NAOSH Week.

This year, the corelation between on-the-job safety and off-the-job safety is emphasized with the theme, "Start it! Live it Every Day!"

The goal of NAOSH Week is to focus employers, employees, partners and the public on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home and in the community. That goal is realized through many events, ranging from conferences, employer events, speaker presentations, poster competitions, to safety and health training sessions across North America.

Help me make this concept of safety really come alive:

Make this North American Occupational Safety and Health Week your starting point for CHANGE!
