Teaching my daughter to drive
I'm supposed to be a wreck teaching my teenage daughter to drive, right? But I'm not ... instead I feel humbled and enlightened by the whole experience. Let me explain: I've long felt I am a good driver, abiding by the rules of the road (and only occasionally getting speeding tickets). But my 16-year-old is showing me the light...
Colleen, 16, my pride and joy, is often wise beyond her years, but behind the steering wheel, she is relying on me to impart knowledge. By introducing good driving habits and reinforcing rules of the road to her every day, I am revisiting my own habits as a driver - and it's not always welcome information!
I cannot speed if I don't want her to take that risk. I cannot just slow down at stop signs if I want her to come to a full stop. I cannot turn into the right hand lane from a left turn lane if I want her to do it differently.
The open road is NO place for "do as I say, not as I do"!
So, my daughter's driving training is making me a better driver... Safety is contagious. Trying revisiting your practices and you, too, might be surprised at what you see!
