Give your (Hard Hat-less) Head a Shake!
Got safety gear? How about you... [here's a thought].. wear it!?! I read an almost unbelievable statistic today: 89 percent of safety professionals polled at the 2008 National Safety Council Congress have observed workers failing to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when they should have been.
And it's getting worse, according to Kimberly-Clark which conducted the survey: In 2007, 87 percent of respondents said they had observed PPE non-compliance in the workplace; in 2006, 85 percent said that.
And this from SAFETY PROS! Imagine what the rest of us have witnessed in the way of safety gear discarded?
Walk on by?
Roofers not tying off on roofs... Hard hats not worn, safety gloves removed, neon vests not donned for road work, etc.
What do you do if you see this kind of foolish behaviour in work situations?...
- Walk right by and pretend you didn't see anything?
- Risk getting told "mind your own business" if you stop to suggest they put that hard hat on?
- Sneak off and phone that person's supervisor/company with the bad news?
Hard question: How much are we our brother's keeper?
What do you think?
