road safety

I'm sure you've seen a sign like this as you approach a road crew - a warning sign reinforcing the seriousness of driving too fast through a construction zone.
Why such a big jump in the penalty - doubling the fines? Because you could be endangering the lives of those young women and men wearing the hard hats and safety vests while they improve your roads, that's why!
Everyone seems to accept the doubling of fines in these high-risk circumstances when it comes to road crew safety... so why don't we apply the same principle to workplace safety in general?

This week the use of hand-held cellphones, Blackberries, other PDAs,
iPods and other MP3 players, and handheld GPS systems while driving became illegal in Ontario, where I live and work. Now only
hands-free devices can be used in the new "distracted driving" law.

As I sit on my couch and watch the news I can't believe what I am hearing about a
tractor trailer losing its load and killing a 53-year-old man on a Toronto highway. When we think about workplace safety we often think about on site jobs but what we fail to recognize is that a
large percentage of injuries are the result of traffic accidents.

We seem to be well on our way to a safety-first society. Automobile seat belts have led to bike helmets and recently to ski helmets, which have now led to cries for tobogganing helmets, endorsed by Health Canada and some safety groups. What's next? Golf and tennis helmets? Jogging helmets? Maybe helmets for kids to wear to school on "snowy roof days." There's no end to how far you can go when you try to make life a "zero-risk" activity!
