Specific Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Operations
Operates the draw works in the hoisting of the drill pipe and associated equipment in and out of the hole, maintains the proper characteristics, e.g. weight in the bit, rotary speed, pressure and volume or drilling fluid, while drilling operations are underway
Directs the assembly and proper use of core barrels, reamers, testers, fishing tools, and other special equipment, as required
Reads, interprets, and takes appropriate action as indicated by the various gauges, indicators and control devices on the rig
Keeps an accurate record of footage drilled in tour book, maintains an exact tally of drill pipe and casing, and is responsible for the care of materials, equipment and spare parts necessary for normal operation
Makes regular inspections of the rig to ensure that all safety and operating equipment, e.g. rails, guards crown savers on the rig are in good working condition
Stays current on the condition of the drilling fluid and directs the Derrickhand accordingly
Supervises the rigging-up, rigging-down or moving operations of the rig as directed by the Rig Manager
Provides Rig Manager with information on parts required to maintain rig supplies
Issues comprehensive instructions for maintenance to be done under the leadership of the Derrickhand and / or Motorhand
Informs relief, at change of shift, of both routine and unusual information regarding the job
Participates in all safety programs, processes and requirements
Attends Operations Training up to two times per year and up to five days per training at designated locations
Performs other duties as directed by management
Leadership
Supervises, leads, motivates, directs and trains assigned crew
Provides necessary direction and instruction for on the job training and development of all employees of assigned crew, under direction of the Rig Manager
Completes bi-annual Performance Development Plans on crew members
Serves as Team Leader and member of crew assuring high level of efficiency during trips and other team efforts
Ensures all crew members personally sign out on Tour Sheet, absent extenuating circumstances
Ensures any injured employee signs out on the Tour Sheet as having been injured; if the employee is unable to sign out, sign out on behalf of that employee, noting the injury
Maintains good working relationship with customer representatives at the well, under the direction of Rig Manager
Safety
Works in a safe, healthy and environmentally protective manner
Leads or participates in crew safety meetings; utilizes all safety processes effectively
Reports all injuries received by an employee on tour and ensures Accident Report forms are completed
Reports and corrects any unsafe work practices and safety hazards
Oversees compliance with Safety rules by all rig crew members
Qualifications
This employee must:
Be at least 18 years of age
Pass a post-offer physical examination, fitness testing, safety aptitude test, drug tests & background check
Provide proof of and maintain proper legal authorization to work in the United States
Arrange for reliable transportation to and from work and training locations
Speak and read English well enough to understand verbal and written safety postings, alerts and announcements, communicate with co-workers and be able to participate in job safety analysis meetings
Technical Competencies
Understands and is capable of reading all safety / training requirements and materials
Knows fully the duties and responsibilities of a Derrickhand, Motorhand and Floorhand
Performs the duties and responsibilities of a Derrickhand, when needed
Understands rig components, instruments and equipment completely
Understands bit selection, proper weight and speed for different formations thoroughly
Understands hole conditions and potential problems
Knows drilling string, types of joints, conditions of joints, shoulders, and threads completely
Understands fully what is expected of them in event of a kick and the steps it takes to secure the well, including responsibilities of each crewmember
Maintains good computer skills, including Microsoft Products
Develops and exhibits competency of all Driller “Global Skills”

Education and Experience
4 - 5 years of ever increasing knowledge and responsibility on the rig having worked in all other crew positions or equivalent education training and experience
High School diploma or GED is preferred
Other Accountabilities

Occupational Health and Safety – Understands fully the Ensign Health and Safety policy and self-responsibility for own health and safety at work; Demonstrates responsibility to avoid adversely affecting the health and safety of others through any act or omission
Uses the correct protective clothing and equipment as provided by Ensign and guards against misuse or damage to such equipment
Reports any hazardous situations arising in the workplace that cannot be self-corrected, or injury incurred during the course of work, no matter how minor
Avoids injury resulting from manual handling tasks, by use of risk assessment, correct mechanical handling equipment and correct manual handling techniques
